How to Read Literature Like a Professor

Prompt 3
The sonnet form has been prized since the English Renaissance. Why does Foster consider its study critical to the study of poetry? How does the structure impact its effect? What is your familiarity with sonnets? Do have a favorite? Why?

  1. This was a very interesting part of the book. Just why are sonnets so important? Foster seems to believe that it is because they can be easily read, comprehended, and analyzed because more people are familiar with sonnets. He points out how sonnets are more commonly known by the average person as opposed to poems. This factor could be the basis for Foster believing that sonnets are critical to the study of poetry.

Structure can definitely make an impact on the way a reader interprets the literature. Certain words are grouped together to create a meaning in itself. Sometimes speaking about the meter or style of the poem can be boring, but, as Foster mentioned, it can be the make or break part of a poem.

My personal favorite sonnet is Shakespeare's Sonnet 18. We all know that he is flirting with a girl by telling her she is beautiful like a summer day, but there will always be more to draw from the sonnet than that. If we drop that fact that Shakespeare is complimenting a woman, then the possibilities are endless as to what he could be complimenting. That's why I like this sonnet...because possibilities are endless when it comes to the meaning.
